Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

OT (also to SuziQ, WNeighbor and any garden-type hobbits wishing to respond). My m-i-l wants to move several plants including day lilies, hydrangea (which, bless her heart, she still refers to as "high geranium"). When is too late in the season to move them? I'm concerned that if we wait until the house is sold we'll be in the middle of the summer.

Okay, I checked the other replies before saying this so I didn't repeat too much. The daylilies ought to be fine moving anytime if you don't mind a season without blooms. If you move in the hot summertime try to keep them damp and cool for the time between coming out of the ground in one place and going in at your house. Try to get this done quickly though and water the new ground throughly even maybe letting some drip irrigation go on for a few days.

Those high geraniums.... I don't know much about. I never had any. But, when I moved up here it was in the month of July. Central Texas. I dug my plants one day. Put them into buckets. Wrapped in heavy duty black trash bags. Put them on a 16 foot flat bed trailor and the next day drove them 210 miles in 100+ degree heat. Unloaded and only opened tops of trash bags. Sprayed with some water from hose good and spent the next week getting them into the ground. I did this with a variety of shrubs, rhizomes, bulbs and assorted perenials and the only thing I lost was sage. I tend to think that they're hearty if they've been in the ground 2 or 3 years.

I don't mind a season without blooms. I'm going to put them along a border in the back, which is basically a mud pit right now anyway...

Somehow I'm thinking that you won't lose any sleep if any of these plants actually don't make it anyway. ???? Maybe?

Anyway, remember, there's lots and lots of garden places that can replace those lilies and hydrangeas if you actually need to. that's what makes gardening less stressful than raising kids

Well, she's got a lot more stuff I'm not so concerned about. I won't mind the lilies and the hydrangea. Plus she has a nandina she cut from a plant at our old house. And then there are the daffodils, which I'm thinking of planting through the back yard to let them naturalize.

But I lost count over the other stuff she said she wanted to bring...

Ok so GET THIS.

There was an e-mail sent around to the whole building about how there was going to be a Wall of Honor, showing those people that are serving overseas that are related, or loved ones of people here at work.

The e-mail also stated: "With talk of war, we need to come together and encourage those who have loved ones that are seving in the military for our country."

A woman here at my office has a husband over in Kuwait. She went into one of our kitchenettes and there were 2 ladies in there. She knew them (worked in the same dept as them at one point) and one of them says: "So I hear I need to be nice to you now." (said in a nasty tone) And the other goes: "Yeah and pay your mortgage?"

Can you believe it? Her husband is out there risking his life for those horrid women!

I know the one lady is a diehard liberal, but I didn't know about the other one. The only reason I can think of them saying that is that they are against the war and were taking it out on her.

I'm just so upset at those two. I'll never speak another word to either of them....which is fine as I never cared for either of them to begin with!

Corin it sounds like you are really going to have fun with those plants. Since you've decided you have multiple reasons for taking up this new endeavor you are indeed fortunate to have things that are already established and in the family to get going with. It will be fun.
