Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Morning everyone! Sorry I'm so late getting in here, but I had stuff to do and the mother of all headaches! UGH!
First off...BREAKFAST!! I heard Wneighbor''s and OT's stomachs grumbling. And I definitely cannot have OT eating cafeteria food! :)
Fried eggs, grits and 6 platters of bacon and sausage links. Buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy are next to the stove. I've whipped up a HUGE ham and cheese omelet as well for those who liked their eggs cooked through. Banana nut bread is ready to serve (the honey butter is on the tray next to it). Coffee is ready and juices are chilled! ENJOY!
My friend's baby had tests run yesterday and it appears that she was taken out A MONTH EARLY!!! That is why she is so small and the bones of her skull are underdeveloped and why she has trouble breathing.
Apparently, the doctors miscalcalculated the due date and set up the C-section 3 to 4 weeks too early. Needless to say, she will remain in neo-natal intensive care in an incubator until she is stable enough to go home. She does, however, have club feet. Becky had the same thing and had to have surgery at 9 months to correct it. But at least it appears that there is nothing incurably wrong with her. Praise GOD!
libarian - So sorry I didn't welcome you before! Come on, sit down and have some breakfast before you hurry through your day. And you a Dwarf too! I have a particular affection for my axe-wielding friends. :)
Hair - Um...you "should have learned from OT's probes"..??!!! I am NOT going there! Must. maintain. Hobbit. control. ;)
Sam Cree - naughty Man! I saw that clip and did not bring it into the Hole for fear of offending the cat lovers in here. Shame on you! LOL! I'm dying over here!
g'nad - Thanks for the encouragement, Master Dwarf! I am so grateful for you guys!
ksen - Redneck Horse Shoes, huh? Looks more like the typical wedding reception festivities in Gondor to me!

Banana nut bread? Well....so much for the diet.
Libarian is a dwarf too so you'll probably need to fry up a whole cow's worth of bacon every day.

Thank goodness about the little one!
The good thing is, in just recent years...the last 20 years or so, we've come a long way in providing "slighty early" babies with the lung surfactant they need.
Babies are pretty well developed by the last month...just putting on a bit more growth and a lot more fat. The only thing they lack is a natural surfactant that causes their lungs to stay inflated when they take that first breath and not collapse back down and stick together. This is formed right at the end...right before birth.
About 20 years ago, someone figured out how to make an artificial surfactant and it really changed the world. One of the greatest things (in my opinion) to happen in the medical field.
So the doc taking the baby out too earlier is not a great thing (and I'd be pretty hacked, I can tell ya) but it shouldn't be a terrible thing. The baby is surely in the hands of a pediatrician or neonatologist, now and the guy who goofed isn't in the baby's picture anymore.

Man - sorry about what seems like a big goof on due date of that baby! - How did this happen? Was the brain development the reason for the c-section, and they had done the math wrong? Or was it something else?
But the good news is besides being early she is doing better than you feared? What a story!
Um...you "should have learned from OT's probes"..??!!! I am NOT going there! Must. maintain. Hobbit. control. ;)
OT said something about using a probe in the lab, and just the word probe made everyone giggle... So I should have known!

Needless to say, she will remain in neo-natal intensive care in an incubator until she is stable enough to go home. Both of my boys were taken early because the Mrs. had trouble with her blood pressure. With Jr. she was just hours away from a stroke. He came 4 weeks early.
Luke was delivered at 30 weeks, 10 weeks early and weighed only 2 1/2 lbs. We were amazed at the differences in what the medical profession had learned/developed in the 11 years. Luke spent 6 wks in the neonatal intensive care unit. We dealt with acid relux and still deal with asthma. But he's fine otherwise.

I hear ya, 2J (about being hacked)!
I was shocked when they told me that the last ultrasound on the baby was done at 18 weeks! It seems to me that it should be SOP to do an ultrasound before the C-section, but I guess not.
Mommy is fine, albeit very concerned about the baby's well-being. She also is working on securing an appointment with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon (I recommended Becky's, even though his bedside manner stinks, he is truly the best).

The math mistake was due to the fact that mommy skipped a period before she conceived (I am deliberately not giving her name out of privacy, I don't think she wants her problems publicized). Thus, her doctor was working on a skewed date of birth from the start.
I know when I was pregnant, the ultrasound was used to determine the growth rate of the child. Measurements taken and all that to make sure the baby is developing at a normal rate. Why wouldn't they notice a 4 week discrepancy in size at the 18 week ultrasound? It's a mystery to me!
Oh and I remember the "probe" posts. Too funny!!
