The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Walmart has them too.

Okay. Walmart is closer but I'll need to summon the fortitude to face the checkout lines. :)

G'mornin'

I was a lazy slug this morning and did not go work out. But then again, since I went with Jr. last night, I went twice yesterday.

In other news.....drumroll please....40 lbs.

Sweeeeet! As in 40 lbs lost? That's awesome!

Morning all- another sleepy morning. Was up past my lame little bedtime again watching "Children of Dune". Will post a review after I wake up a little more....

Very cool! - Congratulations!

Good morning everyone! It is 4:30 in the morning! - Why am I up? - Good question! I have been up an hour. GRRRR.

Possible ROTK Spoiler?
Xoanon @ 6:39 pm EST
gruffy the elf writes: In the most recent issue of the LOTR Fan Club Official Movie Magazine (Issue #7, Feb-March, 2003), there is an interview with Daniel Reeve, a (the?) calligrapher for the movies.

When asked about how he went about creating Bilbo's journal, he talks a bit about training Ian Holm to do his "Concerning Hobbits" bit at the beginning of the FOTR extended DVD. He goes on to say,

"..., I had to train Elijah to write with his quill, too, and do his little bit in the journal."

Does this give us a little insight as to what events might appear at the end of ROTK?

Good Morning!

Update for the Hobbit Hole "gifts from home" for our troops in Kandahar. For those of you who were not aware, a few of us, led by 2Jedismom, sent four boxes of stuff for the troops this week, mostly hygene and necessaries first. Next will be a set of boxes full of fun stuff: books, movies, games, magazines and such.

I sent the chaplain a note asking him some questions before deciding what should go in the "entertainment boxes" that are going next.

I told him that since LoTR is our love here in the Hobbit Hole, we would like to send LoTR books and movies (in addition to other stuff), unless their library was "up to their ears in LOTR" already because of its popularity. Here is his answer!

Thank you once again for your support of soldiers. To answer your questions:

A few copies of the LOTR would be great. I'm sure soldiers would love to have the chance to read it. As a rule of thumb: paperbacks are better than hardcover books because they're cheaper, and they're smaller so they can be packed in ruck sacks, assault packs, etc. Also, if the book gets rained, hailed, or snowed on (which happens quite frequently) then you're not out that much if the book is ruined.

We have a wide selection of videos and DVDs at the Power House that soldiers can come and watch. We only ask that "inappropriate" movies (and books as well) with sexual content not be sent. No, I don't think I've seen a copy of FOTR at the Power House. Soldiers, of course like newer movies, but they also enjoy watching the "oldies but goodies" as well. Cards, games, magazines (whether new or old) are always good things. The only rule about sending stuff that I'm aware of is: no pornography, alcohol, or illegal drugs. What a great rule! Thank you again and may God bless America!

Well that settles it for me! - I think we need to buy a few copies of LoTR books, and at least one SE FoTR!

If you are interested in pitching in for this set of boxes, we are sending money to 2Jedismom via Paypal, and she is purchasing and sending the stuff. We would love to have enough folk involved that we can send lots of stuff! Freepmail her for the particulars on how to send the money. She has done a fabulous job of shopping and getting this stuff sent!

The entertainment boxes will be fun!

Thanks for the update (and the congrats BTW, many more lbs. to go...)

Paypal has debited my account, but they still aren't showing the credit. Next time I'll just mail 2J a check.

The clock is ticking...

It wasn't that hard when I did it... I don't think they actually show it till 2J cashes it? It went really fast when I did it, but she was shopping *that day* and pulled the money right out. This time, she may not be pulling the money till next week.

No, my problem is that it hasn't shown up in my Paypal account to be able to send it yet.

Loved the Myst series, all of them, too. I guess the first was my favorite, it was just so bizarre. But the last one, Exile! After all the mechanical wheezing and dripping, I just loved the bromeliad world. Yes, a huge waste of time, but there is little like the feeling when you are up at 3am working on a complex you have spent days on, and then it suddenly opens up.

Cool. I don't get magazines, so I don't have that kind of stuff around. I still have my 'Minority Report' DVD that I am going to send 2J... And I have some John Grisham paperbacks I would send... other than that I think I will just send money. I think 2J is better at finding deals than I am, especially on heavy things like books. 2J and some money at a used book store would go a long way!

2J.... I could shop for deals on the SE FoTR DVD online and just have it shipped to your house, but I bet there are nice used copies or cheap new ones around locally that would save us shipping. Your time spent looking is also valuable, so let me know if it is easier to just ship it to you.

The debit from my account and the credit to Paypal happened at the same time. Did you do the bank transfer thing? Perhaps give them a call? They were really helpful when I called. I had originally done a credit card transfer and we had to 'undo' that because 2J didn't want to have to pay to pick it up. I didn't know what I was doing, so I called. There is a number on the site.

I had a backlog of Isaac Asimov's and Alfred Hitcock's that I never read...they were piling up on the bookcase so I just sent them. No way I could catch up on all of them.

"gruffy the elf"

Sounds more like a dwarf. The writer may be confused about his identity.

Good morning, everyone.

Gruffy is a poor name for an elf. I think perhaps you are right!
