Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Growing up in Virginia I was shortchanged on 20th century history.

You know, one year you'd study Virginia history. So you'd start with Jamestown and by May you'd hit the Civil War. Then the next year you'd study American history. So you'd start (of course) with Jamestown and by May you'd hit the Civil War.

I'm not making this up. When I took American History in college I couldn't figure out why we were studying Massachusetts.

I try to make up for it by reading a lot of historical biographies. Maybe I'll see if the library has that...

There was one episode in those books that stands out for me. Germany was overrunning France. England was in some sort of negotiations to give the French Navy safe harbor in case their government fell.

French ships had put to port and the English Navy had stationed ships outside of the ports. Finally the French government fell. Many of the French ships surrendered to the British, but there was one that didn't do anything. The British captain radioed the French ship and told them they had a certain amount of time to give up their ship.

The time passed without comment, so the British captain ordered his ship to sink the French ship. They did.

For some reason this struck me as a very brave and tragic thing to have to do. A few days before these ships were allied together. The next, one side is having to sink the other to keep their ships from falling into the hands of the Germans.

Well, I don't know what made me think of that. I just thought it was a neat story.

WOW! Your birthday's on Saturday too. I wish I could just run up there and hang out for an hour or so......... bringing a cheesecake of course!

Know what you mean about the staying home thoughts. For years and years I've had a large birthday reputation. I've celebrated with multiple parties/dinners/lunches for years. What a surprise to old friends now who discover that the schedule includes an evening at home. (Although even with all the years of weeks of celebration my birthday itself has always been reserved for going out with my Grama!)

About the closest my fat cat gets to exercising is sleeping on the handlebars of my exercise bike...

Yeah, I recommend them. It is a five-volume set. Our library was having one of those "sell the old books" sales. It was fill a bag for $1. So I managed to stuff all five-volumes plus a bunch of other books.

One book of bad theology I picked up was written while the author was on the ship that picked up the survivors of the Titanic.

Corin, by small holes - don't make 'em too small or they may get clogged. I don't know how big these pots are you're looking at but I'd think holes ought to be 1/2" to 3/4" diameter.

I put her dry food bowl on the desk so she at least has to climb up there to eat.

I had a friend in college that was goin' fer his PhD in Agronomy... we called him "Dr. Dirt"...

We've got The Dirt Doctor up here in north central Texas. Has a great radio show on the AM talk station for 4 hours on Sunday mornings. Brilliant guy. Tells me all kinds of stuff to do that I don't have time for.

Well, the rain sure messes up a race. But, it's going to be good for your yard!! I still haven't got my stuff out. I didn't do it Wednesday. I had to busy myself with new delicious cookies. I know, misplaced priorities (again)

Yes, she is. Doesn't look like it would be that comfortable, does it? But she really does sleep like that! Nuts...

Meanwhile my boy cat has never had an extra ounce of fat. I almost worry about him sometimes. But he's WAY active and doesn't eat all that much.

Yard? I've got a wooded lot with a bunch of weeds and half a pine tree lying in the back yard!
