The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

You've got me thinking about Ents and the purposes of PJ's changes. Most of his changes seem to be intended to develop the screen characters and to minimize the number of temporary characters. Now, the Ents were minimized in TTT so why was it necessary to develop them by having the hobbits teach them? Ents are possibly the oldest creatures in ME and certainly some of the wisest- especially Treebeard. So why not have the Ents (who are temporary characters) teach the Hobbits (major characters) a thing or two about courage and deliberation and waging war? Then the Hobbits can dramatically recall Treebeards words as they each go into battle and draw strength from them. Even when they return to the Shire, if that is shown, they can carry with them the lessons learned from the great Ents: not being hasty, being reluctant to go to war but once roused wage it ruthlessly, etc.

The "old people can learn a thing or two from chilrun" thing is very Hollywood.

That being said, the Ents were darn fun to watch.

"Everything was fine until they reached Fangorn... then I don't know what book PJ was makin' a movie about."

LOL! That's almost exactly what my brother said! (he is even more a book purist than I).

Erkenbrand is a minor character, but with Eomer at Helm's Deep, his character could have developed more...

the love triangle exists, but way too much time is given to it...

as far as the Ents not knowing the full extent of Saruman's incursion, I'm not buyin' it... do you really think not one Ent went to investigate the smoke rising from Isengard... where there's smoke there's fire, and that means burning trees in ME...

I will see it again... hope my opinion changes...

Eomer

Eomer

If I were a character in The Lord of the Rings, I would be Eomer, Man of Rohan, heir to the throne, nephew of Theoden and brother of Eowyn.

In the movie, I am played by Karl Urban.

Not too bad, if I do say so!

Mrs. don-o has some hearing loss. She knows the stories well, but mentioned only being able to catch about 1/3 of the dialog

I did a little research and found that some cinemas carry "assistive listening devices" like headphones and I would love to try one sometime. I missed quite a bit, but Steve is so use to the expression I give when I miss something that he just leaned forward and muttered the words in my ear whenever he saw me looking puzzled.

Maybe that's why Corin isn't here yet. He probably got Elrond as his answer and is in mourning. :)

*AHEM* I see you've been talking about me, but looky here:

Gandalf

Gandalf the Grey

If I were a character in The Lord of the Rings, I would be Gandalf, Wizard, a guardian against the Dark Lord.

In the movie, I am played by Ian McKellen.

So. There. Take that you smirky little elves. Told ya that's who I'd be all along, didn't I? Told ya the dwarf thing was a cover, didn't I? But we didn't want to brag, so we'll continue as Corin Stormhands Dwarf Extraordinaire.

Quite busy here folks. No time to even catch up on posts, just checking email and bank balance (yikes!). Off to buy a few last minute itemses. I'll be back around the end of the week.

Merry Christmas to All!

What a gorgeous snowy day we're having! It snowed incredibly yesterday, while we were out shopping...took us 2 hours to get home (5 miles). Then it snowed all night, lightly. Very pretty!
