The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I hate to pour cold water on it, but Make-A-Wish will no longer honor wishes that have anything to do with guns, archery, or hunting.

Yeah, but they still do some really good stuff. I don't contribute to them directly, we do a couple of specific "diseases" because of personal connections (I'm a cancer survivor, our neighbor's daughter has CF, etc.)

But that's also why I'd get a kick out of contributing to a right wing cause in the name of some of my co-workers.

Why'd you have to go over there and pee in Woody's cornflakes? (Piper thread)

Well, I certainly didn't expect that kind of reaction. I asked why he reacted so harshly, I'm still waiting on an answer. ;^)

RE: Make a Wish: Humor me. They will have their PR struggles, but I hate to throw the baby out with the bath-water when foundations that compete for donations have to face really ugly public displays and have to figure out how to please the most people, or at least please the most likely 'donors'.

It is part of why I never jump on boycott bandwagons, because it isn't fair to force a company, or a broad-based organization like Make a Wish, into a do or die decision brought up by one-issue people. It wasn't fair when the animal rights people did it, and it isn't fair when we shun them because of it. If conservatives were more visible donors (or volunteers, or workers) to that organization, we would pull more weight, but we either don't give, or don't tell. They know who their donors are... And they need to keep the biggest ones happy to survive. I wish people didn't make them do it, which is why I don't participate in that kind of tactic myself. I don't do boycots of companies over 'issues' unrelated to their mission... As for Make a Wish, I would rather send them money, and say, you spend this doing whatever the kid wants to do. Thanks for trying to give that kid a chance to hunt, and consider doing it again with this donation.

Even if they made a bad (or wimpy) call forced on them by the one-issue people, they still do a lot of good work, for kids that want to do something else. The 'left' buys or out-'PR's their victories. We need to try being even better than them. I think every time we throw up our hands and stomp away over stuff like this, their very real situation is that there is no point pleasing those that never really helped them in the first place.

At least that is how I see it. The Right complains about the entertainment industry, and the Right complains about the behavior of charities, but they have no stake in them. The Right never respected (or worked for, or paid into) the arts or charity work in the first place, so our 'walking out' doesn't mean a lot, the left runs those machines by our default.

Ooops. Sorry. I'm on a diet too, but I went off last night. Went out and had fajitas. Of course right after that I signed a three-year gym membership, so it'll balance out.

My diet is so restrictive tho (no sugar, no salt, no wheat products) that I couldn't find anything else to give up for Lent.

Here. Try this:

This stuff ain't bad if you throw in a couple of scoops of ice cream.

I am on a diet!

Diets always make me grumpy or cause me to catch a cold.

That's why I don't do diets any more.

Do good 'doctrinal' Lutherans give stuff up for Lent? My family was pretty casual about doctrine, and I remain uninformed. Giving stuff up for Lent is something I associate with Catholics, and not something I grew up doing. But I am really a babe in the woods on issues of doctrine between demoninations.

I can't answer that. My background is very inter-denominational.

Diets always make me grumpy or cause me to catch a cold.

I did feel lousy Monday and Tuesday, remember? And was too grumpy to chat much. I have lost all that made me a good hobbit. Was not overly cheerful or chatty until today, when I had sugary cereal and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
