Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

What do you think of getting cats declawed? I was totally going to do it, then I changed my mind and said I definitely wouldn't, but after seeing my carpet and couch I want to again!
Am I horrible awful person if I do it? Did your cat get declawed? How long is the recovery time?
I tried these "Sticky Paws" I think it was called on the furniture, but they didn't work AT ALL. If there is a good alternative I'll do it. Any suggestions?

I agree...its why groups like Greenpeace and all the envirowhacks INFURIATE me. If one follows GOOD science and management principles, there is VERY LITTLE discord between industry/technology and 'preserving' the environment. The Greenies dont want you to hear that. Bjorn Lomborg can attest to that!!
Speaking of which I need to get back on my rant about environmentalism on my blog...the address on that has changed by the way!

I don't think I could ever have a cat declawed! It's like having their "fingers" amputated.
Do you have a scratching post? I've heard that you can train cats to stop clawing furniture by spraying them with water everytime they do it. Let me check my cat catalog to see if there's something else out there.

We've had cats declawed. I'm not sure I'd do it again.
But we aren't in the market for a new cat.

Yep, I have a scratching post. I've moved them to the post every time I saw them on something else but they kept doing it. The spraying thing works? A friend of mine...her roommate had a cat and the spraying never worked with that cat.
I guess I would rather try to train them or something rather then declaw them. I need to trim their claws too...I haven't done that yet. Can you use a regular fingernail clipper or do I have to get a special cat one? I do know to not go too far because they have the vein or something in their claws.

They have those plastic nail covers to put on the cat's claws but I imagine the cat would get them off somehow.

I had a friend who had a cat declawed...after seeing her cat go through it, I could never do it to any of mine. They basically remove the first joint of their toes. Seems pretty extreme to me. My solution is to just keep plenty of junky furniture on hand...
Seriously, though, you may be able to train them not to scratch the furniture. I've also seen little rubber cap thingies that go on their claws, though I don't know how well those'd work. Docters Foster and Smith carries 'em.

Actually I'm glad I finally know what they do.....I definitely don't what that for my kitties!!
Hmmm....if the cats get those covers off though, would they swallow them? Seems to me they'd be little. I've already been through a scare of Gidget swallowing yarn!
I've never heard of those covers though. I think I'll look more into it.

The spraying thing works? I expect it depends on the cat and how early you start training.
You need special claw trimmers. I usually just nip off the tip. I'm too afraid that I'll trim too closely!
