Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

And we had lots of chances of turning back, but we didn't. Hi DT...it was late and got to be too aggravating after a while.
If at first you don't succeed, try try again.
If you still don't succeed, give up. No use making a d__n fool of yourself!

You guys catchin' the news about the fire on/near Staten Island? Yep...something blowed up good.
To: 2Jedismom
There's a huge fire at an oil refinery off of Staten Island. Could be a barge that exploded. They don't know for sure yet. FOX is covering it live.
I think that's all we know. There are a couple of threads on it also.

That covers: disk drive, CD-Rom, CD burner and DVD player...right? I got a combo cd/cd-rw/dvd drive (burns CD's) for my desktop for around $65.
To: Corin Stormhands
Actually I think I transposed the numbers, (I'm an accountant so I can do that if I want ;^)) the model number is 2650, and yes, the $1200 covered everything.... You could probably get one even cheaper by customizing only what you need....

Who all is in Texas?Well, you got three out of four... Lil'Freeper is on the east coast, Virginia I think? My Back Yard and Alkhin are in Texas too.

Okay, so if it says I can upgrade with the CDRW/DVD Combination Drive, then that plays cds, burns cds and plays DVDs.
correct?
But it comes with Word Perfect. What's up with that?
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
I'm in Texas.
To: rightwingreligiousfanatic
Would you mind transposing the numbers in my checking account?
To: Corin Stormhands
Ok...got the thread now and am discussing it with my brother...
Nothing on the local news here...

The Dell website is offering the 2650, with the CD/DVD upgrade for $749, (after a $150 mail in rebate).
To: Corin Stormhands
Would you mind transposing the numbers in my checking account? Hehe...I'm having enough trouble getting them transposed in my own account...
Listening to live coverage on MSNBC on the fire...
To: Corin Stormhands
Go for it.... I upgraded to a larger hard drive and more RAM which boosted my cost....
To: Corin Stormhands
But it comes with Word Perfect. What's up with that? It's cheaper...but I wouldn't go with it.
Are you looking at the preconfigured systems? If you customize, you should be able to add Microsoft Office instead.
To: rightwingreligiousfanatic
Jrs 13. He doesn't need a larger hard drive...yet...

HELP! What do we look for?Rose may be able to offer more thorough advice when she gets home tonight. I kind of like the idea of buying a used laptop relatively cheap (we got one ourselves through eBay) for school use, and a more powerful desktop system for editing and such. Just a s.w.a.g., but I would think you should be able to do both for ~$1500. Well, maybe not... that price is based on the ~$500 Rose and I spent on our latest systems, but we built them ourselves out of parts... I'm adding another $500 to that for a good TV/video card (the one holeinone uses) and a nice, big monitor, to bring the desktop price to $1000. If you buy a complete big-name system you'll pay a lot more than that for something similar.
Oh, and I'm biased, but I wouldn't wish a Mac on my worst enemy.
