The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

My dream host for the Oscars would be Conan :-D

Me too, then we could finally dispense with Hollyweird's political silliness. ;^)

Regarding the "End Times", I agree with my Dad's view on the subject: The "End Times" began when Jesus rose from the grave and went back to Heaven. It's pretty much all downhill from that point, until He comes again.

I agree that we should live everyday as if it were our last because, let's face it, any of us could die in a car crash or freak accident. Terrorism just adds another possibility to the mix, that's all.

When the Lord calls you home, you are going home. The specifics on how you get there really don't matter.

That said, I love the cookout idea. As bad as my tummy feels, I could really go for a nice big steak right now!

What do y'all think? Paranoia? Or does it make sense?

I don't have stores of food, but then I live next door to a grocery store. I think it is paranoia to some degree, because I can't see how everything could be lost at once and we would all starve. There are stores full of supplies every five miles. I do store a lot of water, in a 55 gallon barrel, for the horses. I can't go without power mostly because I have horses that each need 10-15 gallons a day.

True. I've survived cancer and nearly killed Jr. and myself in a car crash. I know God will take care of us, and I'm not really worried.

I guess all I'm really trying to figure out is should I prepare for the worst, or just trust Him? Or is He telling us to prepare? You know, the Lord used Joseph to tell Pharoah to stock up on the grain...

Is anybody else listening to Beck today? More to the point, are you guys "preparing" for an emergency. He's really talking a lot about preparing a 72-hour emergency kit.

It makes a lot of sense, for disasters both natural and manmade. But the idea is to not be totally unprepared.

My biggest fear is that the "3 day survival kit" is only intended to keep you going until the government comes by to transfer you to a relocation camp. Just take the clothes on your back, and leave the doors unlocked. The government will take care of everything.

My other fear is that "relocation" is the only plan the government is considering. And after reading what the state of Michigan has planned for a nuclear emergency, I don't have the warm and fuzzies about this. The state, and the feds, start sounding like Keystone Kops.

The federal government has given the states potassium idodide pills for those people who live within five miles of a nuclear reactor. Michigan has allocated TWO pills (a one-day supply) for those people, but isn't sure how to distribute them. While some states have given those pills to everyone already, Michigan tends to think it would be best to relocate people first, and then give them the pills. No move, no pills.

Except for absolute disasters, I prefer "shelter in place". The government distribute can pills, water, MREs, etc. at local schools or shopping malls. The thing to be avoided is a mass movement of people, either in government vehicles or their own.

One another thread, some Freeper said , "I cleared off my reloading bench, and ran a few patches down the bore". My reloading bench needs a frontloader to clean it off, but I ran a few patches down a few bores, and put the collimator on to assure the sights were still right. I can make my existing water last a week. If they keep the water flowing, I can last about a month. Give me an hour to load my truck, and I can head out to the countryside, and camp out in my cousin's barn, at least.

But I'm deathly afraid of some federal agency coming by saying "put on a coat and get in the back of the truck". That was how millions were introduced to Stalin's death camps. I fear that far more than any terrorist's dirty bomb or bugs.

I'd like to tell you all how much you mean to me. I'm too shy, however.

What I mean to say is... ummm.... You'll be alright.

I will prepare. But not excessively. And I won't put my faith in my preparations, but in God. I think part of being prepared is so you can help others as well as just yourself....

A few months back, the office roomies and I were trying to predict which films would get nods and watching various trailers. Our criteria for automatic shoo-ins were:
1) anti-Christian, anti-Catholic, anything showing a fall from faith or perversion.
2) pro-homosexual
3) Anything feminazi-ish or angst-ridden Women taking revenge, women acting out, women rebelling against society.
4) Anything artsy-fartsy
5) Anything with Streep or Nicholson
6) Anything that challenges the traditional notion of 'right and wrong' or takes up the latest celebrity causes.
7) Anything rated R.
8) Anything foreign and reeeeeally european.

Of course that leaves out Signs and TTT. Roomies and I were busy congratulating ourselves over picking "Frida", "The Hours", "Adaptation" and "The Pianist". We figured "Pinocchio" would somehow make it in.

Didn't see it. But since he's 13 1/2, I'm not sure I need to encourage the hubba hubba part...

If I lived anywhere near a major city, I would consider window tape perhaps a little more seriously. But I am not. I have animals that are outside, and I can't imagine a scenario where I am holed up inside a taped house. And my old trailer is about as sealable as a rabbit hutch. Duct tape ain't gonna help me.

But I also think we've lost some of the "edge" we had after 9/11. I think we're a little more complacent.

Complacent is OK.... At least now we know what we have in us when needed. We can't be *switched on* all the time.
