The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

You'd think it was a crevo-thread.

Okay, things have settled down here...somewhat. It's not all bright and cheery, but we're talking.

We have to talk because Jr. came home with his report card today. After all we've been through, after all we've done, he failed Math, Science, Social Studies and French. His best grade was a C in English. He got a C in P.E. and a D in band (because he doesn't practice).

There will be NO extracurricular activities. We'll make the exception for youth group, but not everything they do.

He's gonna have to drop French. He can start over with language again next year and not be behind.

As for the other subjects, we have these options:

1. We tough it out and hope he passes. If he doesn't he does summer school, which means no youth choir tour to Florida.

2. We tough it out and hope he passes. If he doesn't we homeschool the repeat of 8th grade next year and he's now a member of the class of 2008.

3. We homeschool the rest of this year.

My wife will be calling the school tomorrow to see if it's even possible for him to pass the 8th grade.

He's still upset about the new doctor, who by the way is not a counselor but a pediatrician who now deals only with adolescents. He comes highly recommended from several friends and acquaintances. Jr. is balking, but tonite I made him apologize to his Mom.

That was after I explained to him that throwing a temper tantrum is NOT the way to convince us that he doesn't need professional help.

We're at our wit's end. Hopefully this doctor can help.

The kid's a cutie pie, I hope he can pull it together enough to care about school. I don't think anything can help him until he cares about it. But man, I think it is hard to make a kid care about anything at 13! - Parenting is hard, don't know what I'd do.

Aye, there's the rub!

Hello! Good Morning!

Hair, we closed the room down and opened it up again. Hobbitses are slacking off. Of course we can't help them until they care about it...

I'm with yuh bro... I'm at a loss as to how you make a young boy care about his grades... maybe drive him to a homeless shelter and a prison and tell him to take a good look...

Maybe a VA/NC Moot in early March?

Hullo...

Yeah, I'm thinkin' things through. We've been so worried about his emotional health we haven't cracked the whip on the grades. But there's something going on that makes him just not want to care. Hopefully this doctor can help. He's a Christian and several of our friends say he's great. He'll do a thorough assessment, health, grades, test scores, environment, etc. And I don't think he's one to just throw drugs at the problem.

I've got a program I want to put him in this summer through my work. It would be a very good experience. But if we have to do summer school that's out the window.

Morning all!

Am very happy to be back in my own office. My eyes still feel like sandpaper from a hybrid-electric technology seminar I sat through yesterday. It was interesting but looooong.

Got a buddy lookin' to buy a spread near my place in Missouri... it's remote, and off the grid... power is geothermal from hot springs, solar, and diesel-electric... he's a tinkering genius, motorhead, and philosopher... I shot competitively with John, and taught him to homebrew... he'll be a good neighbor...
