I wonder if this result takes into account that some players' averages are closely correlated with who is hitting behind them. If you have a hitter like Barry Bonds coming up after you, you will likely get a lot more pitches to hit, and your average will go up. Flip-flop those two players and your average goes down. When one player's results depend on another's, you can't really get an absolute measure of a player's numeric abilities. I wonder if this is taken into account.
