Lincoln's actions lay the onus of an unfettered government upon his own shoulders.

There remained no recourse for violations at the federal level of states' rights. They could not overcome a majority in the corrupt northern states and were forbidden to leave...but government usurpation of consent of the governed.

Lincoln remains the linchpin of an incremental slide away from a republic of collected states toward more and greater federal authoritarian powers.

He is responsible.
