FreeRepublic's Instructional HTML Extravaganza!
10/03/2002 | Myself (freeasinbeer)

Hi everyone! I figured that since I get a few questions a week about HTML from members here, and I design sites for a living, that I could help the community by answering any questions that you have about how to post HTML, build your profile page, etc.

Just my little attempt at making this an even better place.

Right-click and View Image

Under IE 6 XP I don't think that is available!

At least I don't seem to have it.

Under IE 6 XP I don't think that is available!

That figures; why leave something that is useful and works when you can screw it up and complicate things! Try 'Right Click > Properties' -- that's how Win2K/IE5.5 shows the URL and dimensions. When you find out, please let me know -- as I doubt I'll ever go to MS's eXcessive Profits OS.

By the way, give Grey my warm regards -- preferably with hot tar! Cheers.

Is there an easy one-shot way to deal with default intralinks when moving partial source code from its original site to FR?

I don't know if FR allows it, but the proper approach is to have the entire article containing the links in question enclosed in a <base href="address-of-original-page">...</base> pair.

Is there any way to set the background color for a range of text, or to set a font size to a certain pixel dimension (to ensure that it fits in a certain-size table regardless of a user's font-size settings)? <span style="background:#123456;font-size:24px">...</span> used to be good for that, but style attributes are no longer allowed.

I tried that before and it didn't work at FR.

I just re-tried it as an experiment and it won't reset those pesky intralinks. Thanks anyway!

Free, thanks for offering your assistance here.

Peach, perhaps you might have some questions for this thread.

Unknown Freeper - Thank you for pinging me on this. I tried to send a previous note you sent that contained hints on HTML, but couldn't find it. User error, no doubt!

How do I post an entire article, rather than just providing the link? Another Freeper, Unknown Freeper, gave me the understandable advice I needed to post a link. But I've also recently tried to post the entire article, not just the link, and the HTML codes I thought were necessary to do so did not work. Any advice? Will check in later. As an HTML deficient person, I thank you.

What you should be able to do is in your web browser, open the page that you want to post on FR. Then, do a 'view source' in your browser (under 'View' in IE, not sure about others). Then, you should be able to go through the web-page source code, and simply copy and paste the story, with all of the HTML tags (and formatting), into the post textbox on FR. This method saves quite a bit of time, especially when you get more familiar with picking out the HTML that you need to copy & paste.

This will give you a nicely formatted story in most cases, but it does take a bit of practice. Always make sure to 'Previe' the story before posting.

Interesting suggestion. Let me see if it works.

Lets see if a cow gif shows up here:

Nope - doesn't seem to work. The http code above, for the broken link, was: But the gif at http://www.speakeasy.org/~pj99/cow.gif seems to be a no show, at least in preview.

Query about the new auto-detected HTML.

If you want to make some of the text underlined, italic or bold, do you have to use html tags? In other words, are you precluded from using auto-detected HTML if you want to stylize the text?
