Hong Kong - A sell-out Hong Kong concert by violin superstar Vanessa Mae ended in chaos when her trademark electric fiddles failed to work, a news report said on Friday.

Audience members walked out and the 23-year-old Singapore-born star apologised for the technical problems which dogged her one-off performance at Hong Kong's Convention and Exhibition Centre on Thursday evening.

Nearly 5 000 people packed into the venue for the concert which began half an hour late, setting off a slow-handclap from the crowd, the South China Morning Post reported.

Her electric violins failed from the outset and Vanessa Mae stomped her feet in frustration as she was forced to use an acoustic violin, the newspaper said.

Technicians ran on and off the stage trying to repair them. When at one point she tried to use an electric violin and it failed, she told the audience: "I promise you, I played all the notes. They just didn't come through."

Vanessa Mae took a 45-minute break for technicians to try to sort out the problems but the glitches continued after the break and audience members began walking out, the Post reported.

It was not clear afterwards if refunds would be offered on the tickets or whether a new show would be arranged.

What a bummer. But I would have stayed anyway--just to hear her sing:
