A few excerpts about Firefly:
"I wanted to do a show in the future that had that kind of feeling, that really had that sense of history, the idea that it never stops, that we don't solve all our problems and have impeccably clean spaceships in the future, that we're all exactly the way we are now and were 100 years ago."-Firefly: The Premiere Website
The show is a departure from the "Star Trek" space opera prototype. Whedon has assured viewers that there will be no latex-faced aliens or laser battles on the show, which is set hundreds of years in the future after an interplanetary civil war. With its twangy background music and antique firearms, the pilot has more in common with "Bonanza" than science-fiction staples such as "Babylon 5."
The official site at www.fox.com/firefly includes a journal- style "weblog" by a production assistant named Kelly, who bills herself as "your spy on the inside." There's also a "spoilers" link on the site, with the kind of plot giveaways that people such as "Star Wars" creator George Lucas work hard to prevent. Whedon has even allowed pages of his shooting scripts to be leaked.
"I wanted to stay away from the easy science-fiction fixes," Whedon says. "The android, the clone, the alien, all the stuff that, for all I know, may be lurking around the corner, but I'm not expecting to see anytime soon."
Instead, Whedon is making a series that is more "Stagecoach," the 1939 John Ford classic, and "Grapes of Wrath" than what sci-fi fans may be expecting.
