ST. LOUIS (Reuters) - St. Louis Rams wide receiver Eric Crouch, who won the Heisman Trophy as a quarterback at the University of Nebraska, has decided to retire.
"I have given this a lot of thought," said Crouch in a statement Thursday. "This decision was tough and not something I took lightly."
Crouch was selected in the third round of the 2002 draft by the Rams, who switched him to wide receiver. He suffered a deep thigh bruise in the only preseason game he played.
Crouch, 23, who won the Heisman Trophy as the most outstanding collegiate player in 2001, signed a three-year, $1.3 million contract in August.
He caught two passes for 30 yards in an August 17 preseason game against Tennessee, but suffered the thigh injury and did not play in the final three exhibition games.
He did not make the trip to Denver for the team's season opening 23-16 loss to the Broncos last Sunday.
Crouch is only one of three players at the Division I-A level to throw for 4,000 yards (4,481) and run for 3,000 yards (3,434) in his career.
He also holds the NCAA ( news - web sites) career record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 59.
