"Friends, kin at funeral dispute media portrayal

MAGNA — Friends and family gathered one last time Friday night for an emotional tribute to the late Richard Ricci — named as the top potential suspect in the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart.

Winterton, Deseret News "To me, he was a very choice individual, a choice son of our Father in Heaven," said Bishop David Morrow, of the LDS Kearns 10th Ward into which Ricci's stepson was recently baptized. "He certainly is not the type of individual that has been played up in the news media." Ricci, 48, suffered a severe brain hemorrhage Aug. 27 in his cell at the Utah State Prison. His family took him off life support three days later. Since his arrest June 14 on alleged parole violations, police have labeled Ricci as a possible suspect in the June 5 kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart.

A small crowd of about 50 people gathered at the Peel Funeral Home and shared their belief that Ricci was not capable of such a horrific crime. Several posters lined the walls of the mortuary featuring e-mail from people around the country expressing their support for Ricci's wife and the opinion that Ricci has been unfairly targeted in the Smart case. The kidnapping was not specifically mentioned by any of the speakers. "I found that Richard was a very loving individual, a very sweet individual, easy to talk to and easy to be around," Bishop Morrow said. During the brief service an emotional Angela Ricci, who married her "soulmate" on Valentine's Day this year, described the tenderness and sense of humor her late husband possessed.

Many in the small congregation shed tears during the service.

Rick Olsen met Ricci several years ago while working as a Department of Corrections employee when Ricci was incarcerated. Olsen said he last saw Ricci in April shortly after the ex-con had completed a treatment program and seemed to be turning his life around.

"He told me how good life was," Olsen said. "He told me things were looking so up. He had the thing in life that made him happy."

Ricci faced state charges of theft and burglary, which included allegations he stole items from the Smart home in April 2001.

I think it depends on the kids and the family. My kids prefer to share a room, even though we have enough bedrooms for everyone to have their own room. My sister and I prefered to share a room when we were kids, too, including when we were teenagers. This does not occur in paradise -- kids still argue and fight, even though they don't want to be alone.

OTOH, I know lots of kids who like having their own rooms.

That's why I don't think it's relevant. Ricci or whoever kidnapped Liz may not have realized the girls shared a room because there is only one big bed in there.

I am sure everyone has their good points! I'm sure Ricci did many nice things. I am also sure he has done some horrible things, i.e. shot a police officer.

Mnay people thought Clinton was a "good guy" too because he did some nice things. I beg to differ with their assessment of Clinton.

The jury is still out, so to speak, with me on Ricci.

Very good catch! I, too, had high hopes for the white mud, until then I heard one report that all of it--ALL--had been cleaned off by Moul. Sherlock thinks I'm crazy, and is probably right. B/C in spite of my hearing that there was absolutely no mud left to test, I also later heard that they'd gotten a small TREE BRANCH from either the undercarriage or the wheel well of the jeep. So, if they got a tree branch, um, I don't think Moul did any particularly extraordinary cleaning job, you think? Sherlock was right--looks like they were able to get samples after all.

It seems like most everyone is gone from posting on the Elizabeth Smart threads. It has been interesting to get to know some of you. I hope we hear some positive developments soon.

Varina, did you read the info on Crook that Home E. posted? He's 53. True, about the trailer park being only his last listed address. Those people move around a lot anyway. Yes, I said THOSE PEOPLE. THOSE PEOPLE=sorry lowlifes who get a criminal record for molesting children.

There's no reason to think Crook was involved. Posters just went through a phase of checking out sex criminals who lived at addresses in/near SLC, addresses we outlanders might recognize. Just another pervert in the crowd. Hey--Pete Romero was discovered by posters online, in the same way, and whaddya know, the police found him interesting enough to question.

I think that's a very good point. Supposedly that turret was built for a nice pretty girls' room. Perhaps the men working on the house knew this; I'd think they would. But perhaps Ricci knew both girls trusted him. Or maybe he never intended for anyone to wake up while he was in there.

Yeah, anyone that shoots a cop and threatens the patrons and employees during an armed bank heist with their lives - including making a pregnant woman lie on the floor - is a prince. You are a week late to that party. Ricci's "qualities' were debated in great detail when the article came out. Would you really expect someone giving the eulogy at his funeral to get up and outline his criminal record? Wise up.

the Ricci's of the world are just bad....they will tell you that they mean no harm and they have this drug habit and yada yada yada...but never get in the way of an druggie.....

If Ricci ran against the Toon, well, I'll be moising up to Canada...lol
