I am even more surprised that they would give the Jeep a good washing before returning it to the Riccis. It sounds like the vehicle was extremely dirty and Moul may have had a young employee that helped out around the place who would have been given this assignment. If you don't have a fancy shop and location you might make up for it by offering extra service. I don't see anything remarkable about them cleaning the vehicle.

Moul said that the Riccis still owed him money. I think that would be from the final repair work not some previous work.

Like you, I am willing to consider family as suspects if we, the public, were to hear even one little shred of factual information which would serve to provide a motive.Whyy would anyone want to even consider the family is suspect in bringing harm to Elizabeth? That doesn't make sense at all.
The only possibility of family involvement would surely be INDIRECTLY, maybe by simply knowing or being an acquaintance of the perpetrator without knowing he was capable of such a thing.
For the record, this is the umteenth time I've said this on this thread.

This is one of those epic moments, Varina, when you and I are in agreement.
Well. Maybe.
The police say they aren't giving the family a pass.
After all the coverage, I don't think there's been anything that indicates any of the family are mean and low enough to do in Elizabeth. But there is always the possibility of mental illness on the part of some family member, you know, Varina. (You do know of such things....don't you?)
Probably no one in Elizabeth's family is sick/evil enough to have done her in. But I do think it is at least possible that Elizabeth didn't put up a fuss when she was led out of the house--either because she (someone with a 14-yr-old mind) TERRIBLY misjudged someone she found attractive, or, more likely, b/c the criminal convinced her that she would soon be coming back. Either way, Elizabeth is certainly not to blame.
Ed might also suspect that poor naive Elizabeth may have fallen prey to the sort of unrealistic attraction that 14-yr-old girls can feel. Maybe his strange phrasings, etc., come about b/c he IS holding something back--what he might be holding back on is, he might be trying to keep what he considers Elizabeth's honor from being sullied.

I don't know, Sandude, I just have a nagging, vague memory that Moul said (Banfield interview) something about the Riccis sometimes having trouble paying their bill without some delay. I would have to go back and read the transcript (if there is one) to be sure, though.

Since there has been a great deal of discussion of when the white Jeep Cherokee was taken in to the shop, I thought you would be interested in discussions found under a Groups search at google.com. I think these groups are called usenet; anyway, they are easily accessible.
There is a poster on those groups named Kris Baker who seems to have followed the Smart case very closely. That poster said the jeep was taken into Neth's on June 3, 2002. There is still some uncertainty, but the poster gave as backup for this:

"The term for this is 'inverted snob'"
Thank you for clarifying the term for this interesting phenomenon. Perhaps Varina is inverted in other ways, too.
To: jengaio
By the way, Jenagaio, would you like to join the Quadrangle of Fear, or perhaps if we got another member or two, we could start the Hexagon of Horror?

You really ought to bow out gracefully. Now don't forget, Jolly, the devil has his due until the Millenium.
To: Devil_Anse
Face it, Jolly Green, she uses the time-honored technique of: "When you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, baffle 'em with bulls--t!" ...and never, never, let facts get in the way of a good story.

I think, that Moul said that the Riccis still owed him money200 bucks
To: Devil_Anse
You have a very good point about, why would some fly-by-night auto repair (if that's really how it is) be washing a car when no wash was paid for? Because he didn't want that piece of crap sitting around his lot looking like that.
To: Devil_Anse
Plus, one media report said they got all the mud off, so much so that the soil sample people couldn't even get a sample from the wheel wellsI don't know where you heard this, I heard they got soil samples from the wheel wells.

Wow, the Quadrangle of Fear! It's the Quadrangle of Fear against the Fearsome Foursome, Bella, varina, S-G, and lakey. We're doomed.
