I was looking at samspade.org and find it interesting but have not figured out what to do exactly with the information I get from traceroute and whois and rwhois etc... once I get it. Do you know what I can use that for? Is that who is hitting my machine or is it just the server they are on?

Who their server is on. You'l have to use judgement on what is happening though. It's pretty useless for judging what's trying to get in unless you know it's a hacker but on going out it will give you an idea of what might be trying to connect out.
