A letter to my Son

August 4, 2002

Dearest Son,

Happy 21st Birthday! What a joy it is to have such a fine son. Today I feel such pride in knowing that you have grown into a caring, compassionate, and industrious man.

As I have told you over the past year or so, I am giving you a special present this day, a handgun. It was on my 21st birthday that I purchased my first handgun, the first of many. During the intervening 25 years I have always strived to be a responsible gun owner, recognizing that this is a right, a duty, and an awesome responsibility.

It is my prayer that you, also, will take that responsibility seriously. You hold in your hands the awesome power of life and death, as well as the tool to provide protection for yourself, your family to come, and the nation. Never take lightly your responsibility and duty, and always strive to exercise due caution and wisdom.

Remember that both your mother and I love you dearly.

Love always,

Dad

Some celebrate their 21st birthday with drunkeness. Our family's tradition is one of recognizing responsibility.

This Sunday I will place this responsibility in my son's hands, with the knowledge that I have raised him with the values to exercise that responsibility.

Great tradition. I'm sure your son will not fail in his responsibility.

One thing I asked my Dad when my youngest brother turned 22, was how he felt knowing all his sons were getting older. He just smiled.

Congradulations.

I am giving you a special present this day, a handgun.

I trust you gave him a shotgun when you brought him home from the hospital. :^)

How did you guess?

(Of course, don't tell him, or he will want it now.)

I must say that I have learned more responsibility than the 21st I "celebrated."

It is my hope that I can custom build 4 identical handguns similar to mine in the same unique handcarved grips with the family "W" on one side and a single sword on the other side. Each will have a matching handcarved box by another unique wood working artist. Or so it is my hope...

P.S. I will have your son beat by 12 years minus 3 days.

That's a good, sober gift to commemorate his coming of age.

I am surprised that no one has yet asked what type of handgun my son will be receiving on Sunday. (No, OPie, it is not the type that we have recently communicated about.)

Any guesses?

A Glock Nine--maybe even a Model 26.

No, you poopy head: an M-16, with nuclear bullets!

Tex, nope, even though the handgun I purchased on my 21st birthday was a Ruger Single-Six convertible.

Doc, closer than Tex's guess, but not a Glock, keep guessing.

Chad, since when has an M16 been considered a handgun?

I give up. Are you giving him an M-16 for his 25th birthday? :P

By the time he is 25, hopefully he will buying the old man some toys. I have no desire for an M16, but either an AR15 or FN/FAL will not be turned down.

I want to see if there are any other guesses. If someone looks at my posting history, they can probably nail down the exact weapon I will be giving him.
