Although Sullivan admire Tillman, I think deep down he realizes that a homosexual like him is and always will be inferior to a real man.And I think that if he read that reply, he wouldn't be sure whether to laugh or feel pity. I've never Sullivan show any sign of being anything short of fully in touch with who he is, and feeling no shame about it.
And he also has a very clear eye for measuring others. It's pretty clear to me that his respect for Tillman is genuine.

I thought "masculinity" was defined as ability to love a woman. A lot of macho looking males in leather are homosexuals.
Acually, I never have and don't intend to spend a lot of time thinking about it.
It's more complicated than what "is" is.
