What's the shelf life of silicone and what's the nutritional value for infants?

She also got mad at me ...Sometimes I have to laugh at how opinionated some physicians are with little empirical basis for their opinions. I remember my doc telling me that I probably wouldn't be able to breast feed so every morning I should take hot tap water that had been sitting in the pipes all night and mix it with formula. The heat would kill the germs. Fortunately I didn't listen to him or my baby would have had lead poisoning!

I don't think anyone on this thread has defended "breastfeeding" for eight years. It is too bad such an extreme case has put us in the position of defending breastfeeding for even a year.Right--this particular woman is clearly a pervert. It's a shame that anyone would use her as an example to scorn others who only want the best for their babies.

Speaking of opinionated doctors, I have this fantasy that I'm in a room with Dr. Lamaze who is passing kidneystones and gallstones, all at the same time, and I say, "Just breathe, two, three, four.."

By speaking out, Lynne Stuckey said she fears the state may again move to take her child away. The American Academy of Pediatrics said roughly 20% of children are weened by age one, and the vast majority of toddlers are weened by age two. Could somebody tell this reporter that the word is "weaned"?

I'm finally back from running errands and I see that so many others have stepped up to the plate to dispell misinformation about nursing. Thanks. ;)

Thank you for finding the information.

I agree with all of this. A good friend of mine is a surgery resident. When he came to visit me after my daughter was born, he asked when I was going to wean (she was 5 mos. at the time!). I gave him some of my bf books so he could learn what they obviously didn't teach him in med. school.

The problem here is not whether it is healthy to breast feed a child past a certain age. It is whether child protection agencies have a right to remove a child from his home and parents for this reason. This is sickening to me, more so than an 8 yr old still breastfeeding. Such agencies should invade and override our most PRIME AND RIGHTFUL of possessions -- our children and our homes -- only in the most severe of abuses. NOT FOR BREASTFEEDING!!!!

I would agree that breastfeeding is best, MG. There are cases where a woman, for medical reasons, cannot breastfeed. And other cases where the desire to breastfeed isn't there.
I was in the medical category, taking heavy meds for seizures and related difficulties. Our daughter was born early and her stomach lining wasn't fully developed so regular formula was a no-no. Thankfully we were able to find a wonderful formula called Nutramigen...$$$ but closest to breast milk they say. Our next step was perscription formula if the Nutramigen didn't work.
I'm so very thankful that at 12 she's healthy. :o)
Probably more information that you wanted but there it is! Have a great day, MG.

Can she still be lactating after all this time? And if she's not, maybe a new term should be used here. And then there can be a discussion of whether or not there are other benefits of putting a child that old to the breast.
