Need information on GW's Military service please.

Posted on 07/01/2002 4:47:50 AM PDT by RogerTC1

I am a conservative Republican who is constantly doing battle in the liberal www.Abuzz.com forum. (Same handle.) I need help as I can not find in a search engine nor on the RNC page much on President Bushe's military experiance other than a Nat Guard pilot. I am getting killed with responces of AWOL and no files. Bill Clinton is a educational deferment documented draft dodger but I need information on President Bush. Anyone have anything?

Thanks

I did a web search, but I could find no concrete evidence that the allegations are not true. I did find this:

http://www.kings.edu/twsawyer/ awol/awol-bush.html

Bush is quoted there as saying: "I served my full obligation with the Texas National Guard. That's why I was honorably discharged,"

And: Regarding #1: Governor Bush, who is said to have an excellent memory for names and faces, says, "I read the comments from the guy who said he doesn't remember me being there, but I remember being there." Later he said, "I pulled duty in Alabama and I read the comments and the guy said he didn't remember me. That's 27 years ago, but I remember being there."

He further explained it by stating: "I was there on a temporary assignment and fulfilled my weekends at one period of time," he said. "I made up some missed weekends."

You may wish to click on that link above and read the entire webpage where his commanding officers are reported to have said that Bush did not report as required and that they could not find any records to show he fulfilled the requirements in Alabama.

Since there are no authenticating records or confirmation by his commanding officers, you probably should let this go. After 30 years, what difference does it make? What matters is how he conducts his life NOW and how successful he is in his performance as President of the United States.

However, President Bush had better come up with something better than what he's previously said to explain this away. Otherwise, this could be an over-blown issue in the next election.

I disagree.

The Democrats couldn't make Bush's military service a real issue in 2000 because he served honorably. Aparently his Guard attendance was spotty the second half of his tour, although it was probably fulfilled and he was honorably discharged. No one cares much except desperate Democrats. After the Dems ran draft dodger Clinton, the military service issue is fading as a real hot subject in presidential races, especially this long after Viet Nam and 30 years past Bush's service time.

In 2004 Bush will have almost four years of a presidency to run on and no one will gave a rap about how many National Guard meetings he attended in 1972. This is a dead issue and after Clinton, why bother debating it? Bush served. No hero, maybe missed some time but probably made it all up and he was honorably discharged.

Those who attempt to smear the President over his National Guard attendance (when he was 25 years old) are delusional that this will somehow turn people off to Bush. That's absurd. By now, you're either for Bush, against Bush or never cared one way or the other. His 30-year-old National Guard service record will have no bearing on your attitude.

Roger, Don't waste time with this non-issue, it's just liberal Bush-haters baiting you for a fight and totally meaningless to today or Bush's re-election in 2004, which will be a huge win for Bush.

The GOP doens't seem to like to broadcast his service. There may be some validity to the charges judging by the way the GOP seems to keep this on the "low-down".

AFAIK he served honorably though. Sorry, no link to help you out.

Given the opportunity to distinguish themselves in combat, fighting the Red Menace in-the-trenches, face-to-face, what did you expect Dubya, Dick Cheney, George Will, Bill Bennett, Richard Perle, Daniel Wolfowitz, Pat Buchanan, Dan Quayle, Elliott Abrams, Pat Robertson, and all the other fire-breathers to do? Answer: take student deferments, pull strings to get in the National Guard, or sweat out the Selective Service lottery.

Warfare is for YOUR sons and daughters, sucker.

Even Democrats like John Kerrey, Bob Kerrey, actor Sterling Hayden (who was actually a socialist) and JFK did combat duty, along with moderate Republican Warren Rudman.

"Child and mother killer?" What hippy chant did that come from. War is hell, pal. Not that anyone in the Bush administration would know.
