I used to go to the Toe Blake Tav (tavern) in Montreal on occasion. A BIG tav, but it closed ages ago.
Women aren't allowed in taverns in Quebec. Taverns served beer (draft and bottled, including those great large bottles we called quarts) and cider and non-alcoholic drinks, and most had good, cheap greasy-spoon style food. (I used to love their pickled tongue with crackers). They were great places to go with the guys and watch sports and be away from women. In the 70's, to get with the times, the Quebec gummint passed a law saying all taverns had to convert to brasseries (taverns where men and women are allowed, a little classier and more expensive than taverns), but they needed to install women's facilities before they converted. Then they cleverly didn't put a time limit into the law about when women's washrooms were to be installed. But it made economic sense to change. (I thought they should have allowed women-only taverns, but nobody listened to me). There are only two old-fashioned men-only taverns left in Montreal, and one's so filthy I wouldn't go there.
