Optimistic,..... maybe. There seem to be so many people in the USA who would rather let the whole place blow up rather than have someone check their ID. Just as I was not offended back when they were looking for those kids, I'm still not offended when they're looking for those who would do us harm. I don't mind the idea of profiling and scanning at airports, etc., but I DON'T like the stories I'm hearing of young, middle eastern-looking men being passed right through, while bluehaired old ladies are practically strip searched. Profiling is fine; just do it to the right ones.

Profiling is fine; just do it to the right ones. I think a problem is that when a screening system is random, it may appear that inverse profiling is being used, when in fact, one is only seeing order in randomness. By that nonsensical statement I mean that people might ASSUME that profiling is being used, when in fact it is not.
Which raises the point -- should profiling be used instead of random screening, or in conjunction with it? If the former, then we'll see blond-haired terrorists. If the latter, then the system slows down even more, now that any vaguely-Arabic-looking male will be screened, as well as your average blue-haired granny.
So I wonder how other profiling-supporters would have this implemented. I'm not really sure myself.

Most of those who object here on FR are the libertarian druggies who fear the cops might find a joint or 50s worth of mary jane, and perhaps some crack.
Profiling scares the hell out of those people.
