Goodbye to hip-hop? Well, maybe. Geoff Boucher makes you wonder in “Hip-Hop’s Slump: A Blip or a Trend?” It’s a conservative report written in the typical on-the-one hand-this, on-the-other-hand-that style favored by the Los Angeles Times — but it raises the question.

What Boucher doesn’t or can’t clarify is whether we’re merely witnessing a huge drop in hip-hop CD sales (Eminem notwithstanding) or the fitful death knell of a musical genre now two decades old.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us pray.

Let us pray that it is a fitful death knell. I don't mind hiphop existing, but I DO mind that it takes up 50% of the charts and most of the other 50% is hiphop-influenced rap-rock.

Bring back some VARIETY. At least in the 80s, the Pretenders didn't sound exactly like Cyndi Lauper.

I ain't no hip-hop aficionado, but there are some styles I like and others I loathe.

PE, Trip Hop? Love.

Eminem? 75% of the stuff that's called Hip Hop today? Loathe.

But saying Hip Hop's dead is like saying Rock-n-Roll's dead. Hip Hop's a genre with many styles. Hopefully some of the lamer styles of today will die an ugly death just like the sappy crap of the 70s and the hair bands of the 80s that fell under the rock-n-roll penumbra died too.

The good bits of any genre will survive somewhere under the radar of the top-40. I can still go see rockabilly or punk bands pretty much whenever I like, though they don't get any airtime. It'll all find it's niche.

We can all hope & pray. The stuff that is passed as music these days is simply obscene garbage. If you're unfortunate enough to have your radio stop on one of those hip-hop stations (or the "heavy metal rap" stations) while in scan mode, you'll see what I mean. It seems like everyother word is a swear word, the music glorifies (in explicit detail) the killing of cops, gangbanging, promiscuous & sometimes illegal sex, drug usage, & an us -vs- everybody else attitude. It makes' the self-centered kids from the 80s (myself included) look humble in comparison. The only way to describe this genre of music (& all it's derivatives) is FILTH.

Oh, please let this be true.

I have been sick of rap/hip-hop from the word go, with the constant profanity, and the verbal references to drugs, the mistreatment of women, gangs, guns and killing people.

And then, when you add to the mix of number of "rappers" that are thugs themselves, (Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, Nortorious BIG, Puff Daddy, South Park Mexican, etc) you have to wonder why in the name of all that is holy a parent would willingly let their child listen to such garbage.

I tend to agree with your statement.

However, the big unanswered question which will spark a great debate and lots of controversy is: will it be East Coast hip-hop or West Coast hip-hop that survives?
