Whohoo! Those 20 states where marrying a cousin is NOT illegal can now proudly shout of their "no branch on the family tree" love........lol

An unrelated couple has about a 3 percent to 4 percent risk of having a child with such problems. But for close cousins who are married, that risk jumps only 1.7 percent to 2.8 percent, the study said.

This represents at best, a 50% increase in risk and at worst a doubling of risk. Only someone whose parents were cousins would think such an increase in risk not significant.
