Speculation is that the Black Sea was a fresh water lake which was flooded by the Mediterranean about 7,600 years ago when the rising sea levels of the warming earth (and possibly an earthquake on the Anitolian Fault) caused the Bosporus Isthmus to fail and a deluge of Sea Water to flow into the Black Sea.

That must have been some river.

Hey, sorry I'm late to reply to this: I was really busy for the past few days. Anyway, it's better than speculation; geological data pretty much confirms that this happened. It was some river; the stories I've seen indicate that the Black Sea would have been rising about a foot a day.
