How's about it, folks? Shall we bring back the spitballers, if not exactly the spitter? (I mean, on the one hand, I think it was ridiculous to outlaw the pitch. On the other hand, like I said - it is fun watching the outlaws trying to outfox the judges!)

Where were all you people when I was defending baseball on the cricket thread? I don't even like baseball, but I had do defend the American pastime over lame @$$ cricket.

A bump in honour of the K-Y kid!

Is this known as praising with faint damnation? ;) P.S. Baseball needs no defence, especially against cricket!

What is true is that the hitters rule the roost, and too many people whose love of the game goes no deeper than a Bob Uecker long ball are bent as best they can on keeping the hitters in power."Uecker, Uecker, Uecker, Uecker's his name; should be in the Hall Of Fame. It's the Bob Uecker show."

You won't believe this, but there was one Hall of Fame pitcher who couldn't get Bob Uecker out with an arrest warrant. "We tried everything," lamented then-catcher Jeff Torborg. "Bob Uecker owned Sandy Koufax." (You can look it up - The Ol' Ueck hit .400 lifetime against Koufax.)

The problem is Americans don't understand cricket.
Play the online game
here to get a better understanding of the game.

Didn't mean to spoil a gag. (Unless, of course, I gagged a spoil...)

"Greg Maddux, Roger Clemens, or Pedro Martinez, either"
Johnson won his game against San Diego 2-0, Maddux was pulled because of a sore butt, but Glavine got the win, Clemens lost against the ORIOLES, and Boston lost but Pedro managed not to get the loss.

And your point is? ;)
To: BluesDuke
Just a minor point, that while these are all excellent pitchers, they still manage to lose once in a while.
To: Enterprise
...and Boston lost but Pedro managed not to get the loss.
Through no fault of his own, alas. (Heard he got slapped around kind of surprisingly today.) But I wasn't damning either the Big Unit, the Rocket, or Senor Martinez in the sentence you extracted, if that was your concern.

The key is once in awhile. We're not talking what Casey Stengel used to call plumbers, after all...

In the words of John Fogerty
Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We're born again, there's new grass on the field.
A-roundin' third, and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way I feel.
CHORUS:
Oh, put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be Centerfield.
Well, I spent some time in the Mudville Nine, watchin' it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when the Mighty Casey struck out.
So Say Hey Willie, tell Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio;
Don't say "it ain't so", you know the time is now.
Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know I think it's time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch 'em all - a moment in the sun;
It's gone and you can tell that one goodbye!
To: BluesDuke
I hope I didn't give the wrong impression. I thoroughly love watching ALL of them pitch. Unfortunately Maddox is "sore" and I think that Pedro is still not completely healthy. ESPN had a segment on him about a week ago and they compared the difference in him now and how strong he was when he was healthy. You could see that he is not up to snuff yet. I hope it doesn't continue but I am afraid he has a long way to go to be 100%.
To: Enterprise
Methinks there was a crossed wire somewhere. I'm kind of surprised that the Red Sox didn't think of having El Pedro wring it out in a little extra spring training, or a couple of rehab gigs in Triple-A, to get his timing, his rhythm, and his focus back. What little I could pick up of the game, it sounded to me as though the rhythm is hesitant and the focus isn't as broad as it is normally. He'll be back, but I can't help thinking a little extra spring training or about three rehab starts mightn't have helped him more.
To: Dan from Michigan
I've always loved that song. But here I'm talking about the salivation of the Olde Ball Game, and you're talking about playing centerfield! (Like to see John Fogerty hit one on the dry side...heheheheheheheh)
