How do you tell if your phone is tapped?
Posted on 03/31/2002 9:01:51 AM PST by FreedomDeb
Hi! Came across this site doing a search on phone tapping. I am trying to find out how to tell if my phone is tapped without having to use special equipment to do so. I have good reason to believe this is a possibility, thus the question here.
Whenever my phone rings, before it actually rings, it does a very slight, momentary partial ring. The phone I used to have did a momentary "whirring" type sound prior to ringing. Whenever I go to dial my phone, as soon as I turn it on (a tone cordless), it sounds as if it is doing a one second pulse connection prior to dial tone. Does anyone know what this is? And if it is a wiretap, how do i get rid of it?
Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks!

The way to get rid of the tap is to make local calls to a complying friend several times a day and play music like Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and Kenny Loggins "Footloose" movie soundtrack for hours at a time. Anybody listening in on your phone conversations will go insane and stop listening within a few days.

From what I have observeed over the years the only way to tell if there is a court order wire tap on your line is to keep up with what ever it is you are parniod about.
Soon enough,in the dead of night, your door will be broken down and your residence will be full of "SWAT" team members from what ever agency you offended.
Hope this helps.

Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after you.

Deb, First of all, cordless phones often have weird ounds in the back, especially if you are to far from the base.
Second, why would anyone tap your phone? Are you a drug kingpin? Mafioso? Informant?

She hasn't posted in over 40 minutes. Do you think they got her?

I am truly not paranoid and I was hoping in this forum, there would be many who would take me seriously. Unfortunately, what I perceived to be a simple, legitimate question has become a forum for a good laugh and paranoia interjections along the way. Sorry for asking the question, but glad I gave many of you a laugh this Easter day. Deb

FD, at least you didn't complain about the new forum format....

I can't believe that modern wiretap electronics would be so technically crude as to disrupt your phone's operation.
What has your phone company told you? You have talked to them, haven't you?

From one deb to another:
This is my advice. Take it or leave it.
I have been a sometime resident in the Land of Paranoia (also known as The Land of Fear). First, you have to 'get over yourself'. If you live a life dedicated to truth, who give a rat's a** if someone is listening to you or misunderstands you or wants to 'get you'. If someone wants to 'get you', they will.
Secondly. Well.....see 'First' (above).
If, however, you are dishonest, or manipulative, or have ulterior motives, etc.......you get what you deserve.

"I even bought a new modem. No good. I got a new puter with another modem. No good. I started talking into the dead phone whenever this happened. I could tell the line was open. The phone sounded like there was someone at the other end. You know, those little hollow electronic, barely audible clicks and buzzes. I would tell the $*%)!*@&#$%$*@&@#$! jack booted thugs on the other end whenever my phone wouldn't work what sort of farm animal they probably were presently cohabiting with. I also explained to them they were wasting the taxpayers money as I was only a tax paying, conservative voting, keyboard commando. It took awhile but the phone rarely has the no dial tone problem anymore. Either they gave up or got better equipment." I'm no telecommunications expert, but I have a couple of years in residential alarm systems.
This sounds like a classic case of either; a loose or dirty connection at the service box or at a jack.
Or a partially chewed wire, with the culprit being a rat.
You don't know how many $350,000+ houses that I made service calls to for this very reason.
You don't know how many looks of shock I got when I displayed rat chewed pieces of wire to owners of said houses.
You don't know how many times I heard," It's impossible for rats to be in my house", as I am looking at the landscaped back yard ending in to thick woods.

This calls for drastic action...cancel your phone service immediately and only use pay phones from now on in a random fashion not just at one location. Cells are too easily listened in on. Never use the internet again and never post of FR because I am almost certain authorities read every post posted here looking for people to question and detain under the newly passed Patriot act. Fortunately I am safe because I am up here in Canada and we only have Duddly Do Right keeping watch over us. But I do worry about Nell and Horse...they seem to have their act together.

I'm sorry to make light of your concern, it just seems that it would probably take something very serious for the government to want to tap your line. Probably a third of the country, if not more, would be considered desenters.

Dont take it personnal Deb unless you want to do so , but you did recieve some excellent information here . There are some very intrepid witty people here , and you probably bring something special or unique to the site also . I dont know about you , but reply #53 has me on the floor laughing .
