Though I'm just as glad that Smeagol wasn't the focus of the rest of the book (no offence intended, Carton ;-).

Here's a question: If Smeagol had won out over Gollum, would Frodo's mission have failed?

No offense... I don't think Smeagol could have carried the story... He's perfect just where he is and for the length he is.

Besides I have always thought the book really was about Aragorn.

Smeagol is a good supporting character only.
