And the thing is, if you screw up your sheetrock, it's so hard to fix it and have it look nice. My mom pulled the paneling off her sheetrock and it really messed it up. She ended up hiring a pro to come in and hang a very thin layer of sheetrock over everything...sorta like a laminate of sheetrock, you know? Then textured it. It looks great, now.

Yeah.... you can't mess up the paper finish on the sheetrock... Paneling I don't think ever comes off without ruining it.

At the place where we grew up there was paneling, and we did a nice job of painting it (By hand with a brush rather than a roller for texture) With a good semi-gloss paint. It came out looking rather nice, after a couple coats of paint. Only one wall was paneled, in the living room, and we painted it several shades darker than the rest of the room, as an accent wall.

This is one thing that has really held me back from getting started on ANY of these projects...the fear of the unknown!

I have HIDEOUS fake wood paneling in the office that will have to be taken down before I do ANYTHING. It's mounted on wood strips rather than right on the wall, but the pain underneath is pretty flaky and will probably have to be partially removed. And the wood strips will have to be pulled off and I'll have to fill the nail holes and all that. That's assuming the wall underneath the paint is pretty intact...

Same goes for the bedroom....there's wallpaper to be removed, and I'm not sure what the condition of the wall will be!
