I would vote for two threads... that way, the people who want to read and discuss the book won't feel crowded by the idle chit-chatters, while the idle chit-chatters won't feel like they're intruding on the serious discussers.

Commute was relatively fast moving. Apparently no one felt like crashing and being forced to stay in the heat any longer than they had to.
