I was just old enough to come of age right after the draft ended at the end of the Vietnam War. As a child of the 70s, the last thing I wanted to do was join the military. And, at that time, the consensus was in my school that you only enlisted if you didn't have the option of going to college.

Once I was old enough to realize that was a stupid sentiment, and once I was old enough to realize what our military really means to our country, I was too old and too out of shape to enlist.

I will regret that til the day I die. But I will likewise be grateful for the men and women who did choose to serve.
