Federal investigations and media reports state that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi did apply for a marriage-based green card (via a permanent status petition) after legally marrying Representative Ilhan Omar in 2009.

Following their 2009 marriage, Elmi, then-a British citizen, applied to adjust his status or remove the conditions on a green card tied to the marriage (such as filing an I-751 or similar marriage-based petition).

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) later requested additional evidence and proof to verify the legitimacy of the marriage. Rather than providing the requested documentation, Elmi withdrew his green-card application and subsequently returned to the United Kingdom.

The marriage and the green-card petition are part of an active federal inquiry and review involving the Justice Department, the FBI, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Representative Omar has strongly denied allegations that the marriage was a sham or that Elmi is her brother.
