I too lived under a flight path into DFW.
They do like like they hover when entering the path. Could set a watch seeing them pop up. Around 90 seconds each time.
We were watching them once because as they got closer they flew over us. Then we heard a huge BOOM sound. You could see smoke to the north. Turned out to be the Delta flight that got wind sheared to the ground. Around 1986 or 87.
I remember that crash. If I recall correctly, the pilots followed the rule book but the book was wrong about wind shear risk.
