Remains discovered from the Isaaq genocide in Somalia
Remains discovered from Isaaq genocide in Somalia

“[Ilhan Omar’s father] Nur Said was a military officer who was loyal to the regime until the end. He was part and parcel of those who caused and created the mayhem they ‘fled’ to live comfortably in the United States.”
—Mohamed Haji Ingiriis, historian and Oxford University researcher.

In researching the genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia for my book Out of the Melting Pot, Into the Fire, I was struck by how many participants in those genocides turned up as residents, or even citizens, of the United States.

Investigators have identified roughly 300 Bosnian immigrants suspected of concealing involvement in wartime atrocities. Many Rwandan genocidaires have also immigrated to the United States. The individual examples are chilling:

Gervais “Ken” Ngombwa personally murdered numerous Tutsis, including some who took refuge in locations like churches.

Marko Boškić participated in the Branjevo farm execution squad that murdered hundreds. Boškić described instructions to line prisoners up and shoot each in the back of the neck.

The question is: how were these people ever admitted in the first place?

This brings us to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and her family. Omar’s father was a colonel in the army of Siad Barre’s murderous dictatorship in Somalia, serving until its collapse in 1991. Her grandfather was national maritime transport director.

Barre seized power in a 1969 coup and ran a Marxist military dictatorship until 1991. In the late 1980s, his regime committed genocide against the Isaaq, carrying out systematic mass executions, killing as many as 200,000 civilians. It conducted state-sponsored terror through atrocities, including the routine use of sexual violence and rape as weapons of war. 1

Omar’s family was an integral part of this murderous regime.

Her father, whose name is Nur Omar Mohamed, has gone by many different names.2 According to Mohamed Haji Ingiriis, Nur “misrepresented himself as a refugee.”

Nevertheless in 1995, gullible U.S. immigration officials admitted Omar’s father and grandfather, along with their family, as refugees.

Worst case: bad code or asylum for genocidaires?

In principle, U.S. law already keeps genocidaires out. Anyone who “ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated” in persecution is barred from refugee status. In practice, the bar is only as good as the screening behind it, and the screening has repeatedly failed: Ngombwa, Boškić, and hundreds of others passed through it.

Ilhan Omar herself was a child when the Isaaq genocide occurred, so she bears no responsibility for any crimes her father and grandfather may have committed. However, one has to wonder: why in the hell are we admitting people with any possible chance at all of being complicit in genocide? Especially given our spectacularly bad track record for granting asylum to genocidaires.

The problem is that the burden effectively falls on the government to prove an applicant’s guilt, often decades later and with records from a collapsed state. For former officers and officials of regimes that committed atrocities, that burden should be reversed. Applicants should have to categorically prove they were not involved, and if they can’t, they shouldn’t be admitted.

We can afford to be strict. The United States turns away millions of would-be immigrants, and many more wait years for a visa, including highly trained doctors and engineers from stable democracies like India. Strictness costs us little when the pool of qualified, low-risk applicants is that deep. Yes, this means some innocent officers from Third World dictatorships will be turned away. Given the alternative, that’s a price worth paying.

Evaluate the worst-case scenarios, and the answer is straightforward: make a mistake admitting an Indian software engineer and you might get some racist complaints from Bo French and some bad code; make a mistake admitting a colonel from a genocidal Marxist dictatorship and you’ve granted asylum to another genocidaire.

2 A Somaliland Chronicle commentary notes that Omar’s father’s high rank and long service in Barre’s army all but assured that he was intimately involved.

Some “fact-checkers” have tried to play down the possibility that Omar’s family was complicit in the Isaaq genocide. Snopes , for example, titles its article: “Is Rep. Omar’s Father a ‘Somalian War Criminal’ Living ‘Illegally’ in U.S.?” It declares the story “Mostly False,” but focuses on the claim that Omar’s father entered illegally (an obviously false red herring) and a bogus story run by Gateway Pundit. The article never mentions that Omar’s father was a colonel under Siad Barre, a fact that is clearly relevant.

Her family, and many others, are here because a certain 3-letter agency wanted them here. Probably as repayment for “services” but also to keep an eye on them to be sure nothing compromising to their tradecraft slips out.

Why do you think she is acting so nonchalant and unconcerned right now? She thinks her Deep State cover will continue to protect her forever.

Unfortunately for her, though, the rules have now completely changed in the Trump era. Her top cover doesn’t exist anymore. Just ask Maduro. Or the Ukrainian midget.

It will be a great day in America when this communist terror-loving b*tch is shipped back to Mogadishu where she belongs.
