Reflecting on the third anniversary of October 7, 2023

With the October 7, 2023, anniversary still resonating, reminding us of the horrific attacks in Israel, and with ugly antisemitism more ascendant than ever, including in America, are Jews deciding to abandon their religion?

Much of the mainstream media has insisted that Jews are leaving Judaism in droves, but the data suggest the opposite. Instead, Jews are reaching out to each other as a means of solidarity, comfort, and faith, even as they watch antisemitic activity increase.

Since this October 2026 marks only the third anniversary of the October 7 attack, it is challenging to determine the current state of mind of the Jewish community. On the one hand, many Jews are feeling threatened by antisemitic diatribes, online and in person. But their actions overcome this fear as they come together to strengthen their resolve to practice their faith.

How do we account for the fact that fear has developed under current conditions, yet resilience against hatred has grown?

First, many Jews have decided not to give in to their fear. In some cases, they are joining Jewish community organizations, such as Chabad and synagogues. Although Jews may be leaving the more Reform or secular organizations (which suggests a decrease in participation), they are gravitating toward Orthodox and traditional communities.

They are also taking advantage of many Jewish educational opportunities, such as podcasts and study groups. Chabad, in particular, offers community activities to all interested Jews, without requiring allegiance to one denomination or another.

Still, these activities do not nullify the effects of antisemitism. Most social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, have seen increases in antisemitic attacks. A 2025 report from the American Jewish Committee (AJC) states that two-thirds of American Jews feel less secure than a year ago.
