This live countdown timer apparently appeared on 9/26/2026. There are various, unrelated, guesses floating around as to what it is for or what it means. The countdown points to Tuesday, 9/29, at 10 AM eastern.

A Washington Sun article may be speaking of it, but makes no mention of a countdown timer.

Before one gets too excited about this article, here's some verifiable info.

The domain which the article purports to be involved in some kind of takeover is owned by the Department of State.

The article states the same-old "according to six current and former U.S. officials familiar with the matter." That's a source? The US government owns the domain. Period.

As to the Washington Sun, it is not quite as it appears.

Additionally, Allbritton is busy with litigation about the names of the media, And which media, and to what purpose? Politics, of course.

There seems to be a line of thinking that the old ‘america.gov’ has been continued under a new URL, and the current ‘america.gov’ is repurposed, with closer ties to Musk et-al. Brings in a guy by the name of Joe Gebbia:

That’s a media family. Politico launched in 2007, the same year the america.gov domain was registered, but Politico was a news company, not State IIP. There is no ownership, contractor, or editorial link in the record between Allbritton Communications and america.gov.Other Allbrittons (Army depot commander, VA DEI exec, a small Tennessee consulting LLC, etc.) also have no documented role on this domain.

I made no such assertion. Allbritton is associated with the Washington Sun which wrote the article to which you linked. And he is a big donor for Democrats.
