WASHINGTON, DC — First lady Melania Trump put a bow on this historic state dinner.
Melania stunned in a white bow blouse and sleek black tuxedo-inspired pants as she and President Trump hosted Thursday night’s lavish White House state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The stylish peony-motif brocade Dolce & Gabbana pants, bow-adorned Saint Laurent cotton poplin blouse, black silk Dolce & Gabbana cummerbund and sky-high black Christian Louboutin heels she wore to welcome Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan — took the internet by storm.
The first lady’s simple outfit had a more complex message — and it wasn’t that she’s the one who wears pants in the White House.
In choosing pants with a subtle peony pattern, Melania Trump was paying tribute to the “King of Flowers,” as the peony is known in Chinese culture. It symbolizes wealth, nobility, prosperity and romantic beauty.
The Chinese consider the peony the embodiment of feminine charm and perfection.

Xi’s wife always dresses elegantly. And her red reminds me of Mid Autumn Festival. If I was Trump, I would’ve had some mooncakes offered at dessert.

Melania and the Trump women are twenty-first century fashion plates.
Both of those gowns are stunning. They definitely out-shined Melania’s getup. But usually what she wears is significant for the guest’s culture and is worn honoring that. I suppose that is the reason for her pants outfit.
Peonies are supposed to be a big deal in China, so I get that. But ... an elegant skirt of the same fabric would’ve been beautiful!
The blouse. Another FReeper mentioned that it looked like she had been TPed.

That immediately came to mind when I first saw it.
I still have so many of Dad’s “preaching ties”, and many are stained with something Mom cooked. I was going to clean them up and make a quilt out of them, but I think I’ll leave them as is.

During Trump’s first term, one of the upper-level staff chicks, Hope Hicks, obviously was trying to be Melania. Her tux at a state dinner in Japan was blatant, and it was mentioned often by the media. I think, but am not sure, that it didn’t end well for her.
And how can we forget Jill Biden’s “outlandish, rather ugly, outfits”? I have seen, and have bought, better looking clothes at thrift shops than her abominations.

About three months ago, I think.
I still have a couple boxes of L’eggs panty hose in my drawer just in case an event comes up where I’d need them. Retired in 2008 and haven’t broken one open yet. Long skirts cover a multitude of sins and pasty-white legs.
I must sadly agree with those who don’t approve. White top, and black pants, are appropriate for the head of the catering team, and even then, ditch that bow.
It happens to the best, though. “More is better” syndrome. The higher the heel, the bigger the bow — the greater potential to collide and stumble.
And if you dress as a signal to others, which we all do — ladies pants at a formal dinner isn’t respectful no matter how many peonies are on them.
Finally, speaking of respect to guests, you probably shouldn’t invite certain people in the first place.
O see where she was going with the elaborate top and the sleek pants, but it just didn’t work. The monstrous ‘bow” at the neckline was awkward amd fussy while the pants looked too casual, especially for a state dinner

She shouldn’t, technically. But human beings sometimes react due to feelings instead of “technically”.
I wouldn’t last 3 minutes in those shoes - tougher than Chinese algebra.
Big Miss on this outfit and the daytime one, the black boring pants suit......hmmmmmmmm.
Melania’s fault that anyone one-upped her.....she didn’t do herself any favors by those two inappropriate outfits.
