Vanishing Point has been called "existentialist."

That's pretentious. But at least Vanishing Point had cool car chases and beautiful desert scenery.

Whereas Billy Jack had heavy-handed messaging.

The bad guys were sooooo evil. Needlessly evil. And the good guys were so pure and good. Even saintlike.

Vanishing Point was definitely a reflection of its time. It had the hip and easy flow of its time. Man in hot car vs The Man! With beautiful western scenery. The further he progressed across the country the larger his following became, as his progress was tracked by the hip black DJ! And that random meeting with the topless chick …..oh, man! It was the final “come together” moment of the silver screen. Everyone except “The Man” united behind Kowalski (Barry Newman). We rooted for the underdog and, sure enough, he went out in a blaze of glory! Most tv shows with cars and cops after that movie loosely followed it.

A case could be made that the moment someone begins to discuss existentialism in anything resembling a serious way, the line has been crossed into The Pretentiousness Zone.
