Sarah Paine is (or was) a professor a the Naval War College and did a series of lectures that are on YouTube about Mao and his rise to power. They are very good at explaining that the calculation in his cruelty. The Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution were not simply madness (although they were madness). They were cold and calculated to keep power by mass killing and imprisonment.
