Latin mel comes from Greek meli for "honey" (melissa means "bee"), but the Greeks got the words from the pre-Greek inhabitants of Greece (along with words like glossa and thalassa). Any Greek name with a double S is probably pre-Greek (like Parnassos or Knossos).

John Adams told his son John Quincy Adams that Greek was the most perfect of all human languages, but he was probably thinking of its intellectual qualities rather than how beautiful it sounded.
