He got neither.
What he got was agreement by Greenland and Denmark to expand our security presence there -- which was exactly what the pre-existing agreement permitted us to do. Denmark kept saying exactly that all along-- "we already have an agreement to discuss expanded security, so why don't they just ask for what they need?"
So now Trump gets the exact same thing he could have gotten all along, except we went through that whole embarassing charade of threatening invasion, etc.. It was utterly pointless.
The frustrating part about it was that he was absolutely right to want to expand our defense presence there to counter Chinese and Russian moves in the arctic, which was something Obama and Biden had basically ignored. He just went about it in completely the wrong way and needlessly ticked off not only some foreign allies, but some of his political allies here in the U.S..
It's like rather than just opening the damn door to get into the next room, he just repeatedly bashed his head against the wall trying to smash his way through. Then eventually, he gave up, opened the door, and just walked through like he should have all along.
