I had a dear German friend years ago who was, as she strictly corrected some in social situations, from Silesia. Cut up now between several nations, she had such a strong allegiance from childhood to it that it was still Silesia. Memories.

Oh, I absolutely can relate to her🙂

And the name of Silesia is still used in Poland (as Śląsk) and in the Czech Republic (as Slezsko). As a regional name, it is still very much alive and kicking 🙂

And I can also relate to her not forgetting her home. As a wise old lady from East Prussia once said, your memories are the only Paradise which you can never be expelled from.

Nowadays, the old German East is hardly mentioned any more. It has been erased from memory, and what a sad loss that is.
