Linguistic exile, forbidden feelings of belonging, and the Western surrender of home.
The experience of returning to a childhood landscape only to find it transformed beyond recognition forms the raw material of Brendan O’Neill’s recent reflection on his northwest London suburb (The Spectator, August 29, 2026). Revisiting streets once familiar, he encounters no English speech, only a cacophony of “Urdu, Russian, Romanian and other tongues.” The record shop has become a greengrocer, the bookshop an Afro barbers, the convent a block of flats. We are MUCH too civilized.
