Opinion: Black Folks, It’s Time to Dump the Dallas Cowboys
The Root ^ | September 13, 2026 | Lawrence Ware

You know him. He wears Jesus sandals, drinks Hennessy, still smokes menthol Kools, and has been saying “How ’bout them Cowboys?” since Jerry Jones had hair. The Cowboys aren’t just his favorite football team. They are part of his identity. And he is not alone.

The Undefeated noted that the Cowboys’ iconic brand was “largely bolstered by their Black fans,” particularly through stars like Bob Hayes, Tony Dorsett and Emmitt Smith. But we need to have a family meeting. Because, Black folks, it is past time ya’ll break up with the Cowboys.

Trump scores again!

@dfwgator -- If Nate Wright was white, the "Hail Mary" would have been offensive interference. /sarc.

Isn’t a little racist to tell black people which teams they’re allowed to root for?

Oh come on! Don’t you know that only whites can be racists?

Sounds like they haven’t heard of black rodeo star Fred Whitfield or black country music singer Darius Rucker.
And they aren’t aware up to 30% of cowboys in the old west were black guys.

Yes the racebaiting crap doesn’t work when people know that many people don’t fit their narrow stereotypes .
And that’s why the USA is the greatest nation on earth.
Any person can do whatever they set their mind to.

I graduated from high school in SW Oklahoma, just miles from the Texas border. In that region there are two, and only two football teams period...OU and the Cowboys..

Everyone else is the team they beat.

I’ll say it. Lawrence Ware is racist, bigoted, and prejudiced.

There is something to it. Remember ‘America’s team? Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders? Even made a movie with them I do believe. They had this way of rubbing everyone’s nose in it when they were winning. I even knew of a black guy in SF who left his white girlfriend and moved there because he was a Cowboys fan. That was around ‘86.

The classic comeuppance was Terrell Owens triumphant stand on the star TWICE.

I guess the author conveniently forgot when Jones knelt and linked arms together with the team before the national anthem in 2017–

in response to President Trump’s comments criticizing NFL players who were kneeling during the national anthem.

Ahh, Sooners. Yeah, take anything they have to say that might touch upon principles and honesty as ...... well, a pack of crappola. Like Aussies, descendants of criminals.

:)*

* Partly ‘cause I’m from Missouri and supported the Cards, not a pack of cheaters like the ‘boys. Also, well, sooners — give ‘em nuttin — they’d steal that, too.

I was a 50 year long rabid NFL fan, and after that whole thing with the kneeling, I just could not watch it anymore.

Sure, I watch a game with my best friend now and again, but...if we don’t get together to watch, I don’t much care.

That whole thing turned my stomach. The NFL made it clear that people like me are not its target audience.

I don’t judge others on whether they follow the NFL or not. It is a personal decision. I just cannot support the league with my attention or my money.

Aw. Have a little sympathy for the Sooners. They are still trying to clear their throat after choking against Michigan yesterday.

I graduated from OU. When there I realized that they had the best college team money could buy.

Indeed, it makes no sense.

It’s hard to imagine, one actually got paid for writing this!

Yeah I was wondering about that too.

The writer is talking about how Jerry Jones is MAGA, and supporting Trump, and so black folks shouldn’t be fans of the Cowboys, because of that. But Jerry was on board with all that kneeling business.
