Des Plaines police said the 21-year-old man fatally shot by police Wednesday afternoon was "armed with an electric hedge trimmer."
Police said officers responded just after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to the 2000-block of East Touhy Avenue for a report of a domestic disturbance.
It was reported that a man, later identified as Ayham Babidi, was acting violently and breaking windows at a home.
The first arriving officer stopped near the home and encountered Babidi in the front yard with the hedge trimmer.
"The subject immediately began approaching the officer brandishing the electric hedge trimmer in a threatening manner," police said.
The officer told Babidi to drop it, but he refused, police said.
The officer fired three rounds at Babidi, police said.

“Ayham Babidi”
Descended from the Pilgrims?
Those things can do damage.
I have a Stihl hedge trimmer (lithium battery) and I accidentally sliced my leg with it-had to steri strip the cut and it left a scar. And that was right through my pants!
Lucky to have missed an artery.
Maybe consider backing up until the guy runs out of wire and then reassess. Was someone else threatened?
I know it is difficult to be a cop
But could he have used a taser to stop the man with an electric hedge trimmer?
Or backed away? Doesn’t an electric hedge trimmer have to be plugged in and how long is a cord
Why was the officer armed with an electric hedge trimmer?
Don’t buy that brand just ‘cause it is cheap.
He should just shoot at the assailant’s trigger finger.
Yeah that is what I thought...AI headline? Or just bad human headline writing?
Ayham is a masculine Arabic name that means "brave," "courageous," "valiant," or "one who plunges fearlessly into battle"
Yeah, and it happened so fast, I couldn’t believe it.
Blood all over the place.
“Man shot, killed by officer ‘armed with an electric hedge trimmer,’”
While I’m no fan of “saving the world”, I do think that switching to electric gardening tools shouldn’t get one the Death Penalty.
Maybe it was a cordless trimmer.
I said, "Help me, Obi-Wan Ryobi. You're my only hope." She got a good laugh out of that.
I say the latter. We see that all the time with headlines in British papers.
My hedge trimmers over the years have mostly attacked their [my] cord in any accidents.
A soldering iron and tape keeps my ~40 yr. old cord still in action...
The Babidi family is going to try the Max Police Payout, and sue the police for wrongful death and suffering .... it’ll be worth millions!
