No. 16 Michigan beats Western Michigan 13-12 on controversial Hail Mary after clock was reset to one second to go

No. 16 Michigan avoided an upset loss to Western Michigan on Saturday night with a little help from instant replay.

Bryce Underwood hit JJ Buchanan for an incredible Hail Mary as time expired for a 13-12 win. The pass came after the ball was snapped with one second left after Underwood's previous Hail Mary appeared to fall incomplete with no time remaining.

After a short review, a second was added back to the clock. And then Buchanan made the catch.

NBC's numerous replays of the first Hail Mary showed that the ball was not close to touching a Western Michigan player who had stepped out of bounds when he jumped for the pass until the clock showed 0:00. Rules analyst and former referee Terry McAuley was unable to come up with a concrete explanation for why a second was added to the clock.

Where did they find one second?……

It was a great throw and catch to “win” the game but it never should have been allowed to take place.

What’s the point of reviewing a play using instant replay with slo-motion if you’re just going to ignore what your eyes can clearly see?

michigan cheats to win. Everyone knows it. They added a second on to the clock to beat PSU in 2005. Cost PSU a chance to play for the national championship.

I hope PDJT was watching and immediately got on the phone to the B1G office and told them “Fix this, or I will.”

I grew up a Michigan fan, but that was BS!

That damn fumble by Western on 3rd down cost them the game in the end.

Who storms the field after barely “beating” a 27 point underdog?

What an utter embarrassment.

You can bet that, right now, NCAA techies are kludging up a 3D animation showing the ball crossing the plane of the out-of-bounds line at 0.001 seconds.

Of course, there’ll be no talk about no one having that view at the end of the game.

On the other hand, the refs got home OK.

NCAA should review and overturn this travesty. WMU should have the win they earned.

“Where did they find one second?……”

In one of those precincts that have over 100% of the residents vote.

I trust elections in Michigan more than I do their football.

Embarrassing they have to cheat Western Michigan. At least the nation got to see the cheat job.

….showing the ball crossing the plane of the out-of-bounds line at 0.001 seconds.

The rule in this case is that the clock stops when the ball is touched, not when it crosses out of bounds.

NBC said that their inset clock showing zero before any player touched it was in sync with the official game clock.

Michigan may be the one team even more hated than LSU.

They showed a quote on the TTU game that Joey McGuire said they were the most hated team in America. At least we don’t play Boomer Sooner when we get a two-yard gain.

Worst clock mismanagement by the officials since the 1972 Olympic men's basketball finals where the Soviets got the same final 3 seconds 3 times.

With Michigan being more deserving...their "storied history" is filled with 1/2 championships and bowl-bombs.

BTW, Bust Underpants is a trash QB.

Unless there is some reason for this, I will always consider Western Michigan the winner of this game. They were robbed. Whoever was responsible for putting a second back on the clock should never have a part in any NCAA football game again.

Maybe WMU should enter the Top 25 this week and Michigan should exit. I believe they were #16.
