Donald Trump's White House has launched Arcade.Gov, a site with mini-games where you catch and deport immigrants, or use Tetris blocks to build a border wall.
The site's mini-games riff on existing ideas, such as Flappy Bill, an obvious parody of Flappy Bird, which asks players to keep the bill in the air while flying through the capitol.
Rio Run, meanwhile, asks you to "patrol the line along the river, pick up every crosser." It's essentially Snake, with you playing a character wearing a business suit, who collects a chain of orange jumpsuited prisoners. At the end of the game, the number of people you have successfully deported is then shown on screen.
Build the Wall: Zombie Border Siege asks players to stack bricks and "hold the line" at a location described as the "Southern Border." It's a version of Tetris, with green aliens entering from the right-hand side who impact your Tetrominos.
Supply Line is a game where you punch offensive foodstuffs off a school lunch production line, letting through vegetables while tossing out energy drinks. And finally, Trump Savings Tycoon lets you "fill your kids' Trump Accounts" by catching memecoins and bank notes that rain down over a Washington D.C. skyline, the U.S. Capitol dominated by a large construction crane. The site has been advertised on social media with videos parodying the console startup animations for the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Nintendo GameCube, as well as the logo of Sega, here edited to spell out "Maga."
Reaction to the site has been largely as you'd expect, which is all entirely the point. While delighting those who support Trump, these games are clearly designed to simultaneously provoke a response from those who would likely see them as distasteful, at best.
Nintendo is among the various companies and individuals which have called out Trump's regime for using their likenesses, music and intellectual property, though the administration seems undeterred. Again, the outrage generated by such antics only serves to spread their reach, and act as another distraction from more serious issues, such as war, climate change and a million other issues.
In March, Steve Downes, who plays Master Chief in the Halo series, demanded the White House remove his voice from a social media video he described as “disgusting and juvenile war porn.” In October last year, Microsoft remained silent after Donald Trump released an AI image of the U.S. president as Master Chief and the Department of Homeland Security used Halo to promote ICE on social media. And also in March, the White House posted a video on social media that mixed footage from its bombing operations in Iran with Call of Duty gameplay. Activision did not comment.
As pointed out by The New York Times, Trump administration spokesperson Abigail Jackson has previously commented to double down on their social media strategy. “Through engaging posts and banger memes, we are successfully communicating the president’s extremely popular agenda,” Jackson said. “There’s a reason so many people try to copy our style — our message resonates.”
Anyway, it's good to see everyone's keeping politics out of games.
